INSTALLATION AND OPERATIONS
INSTALLATION
------------
Before attempting to run SPORTSWARE:Basketball make a backup of the
program. The program is not copy protected so you may use standard DOS
utilities to make your backup.
SPORTSWARE:Basketball comes pre-installed. There is no customization
or tailoring to be done.
The distributed program contains two files. Below is a list of those
files and a brief description of each.
BSKTBALL.MAN This manual. You should print this manual by
using the DOS "PRINT" command.
BSKTBALL.EXE The SPORTSWARE:Basketball program. It is
invoked by typing "BSKTBALL"

OPERATIONS
General Instructions
--------------------
SPORTSWARE:Basketball will always build its data file (BSKTBALL.DAT) on
the current default disk drive. If your DOS prompt says:
A>
then BSKTBALL.DAT will be created and maintained on drive "A". If you
see the message "CREATING BSKTBALL.DAT" when you initially invoke
SPORTSWARE:Basketball it is creating the data file. If it is the first
time you have used the system, this is normal since the file must be
created. If you have previously used the system and you see this
message at start up, you probably have the wrong default drive or the
wrong disk in the default drive.
Single Disk Drive Operations
To run SPORTSWARE:Basketball in a single drive configuration, simply
place the program disk in your disk drive and enter:
A> bsktball
Multiple Disk Drive Operations.
To run SPORTSWARE:Basketball on a multiple drive system, the drive you
want to contain your data must be the default drive (the one that DOS
prompts with). You can change your default drive by entering:
A> b: This will cause the "B" drive to become your
default disk drive.
You can then invoke the SPORTSWARE:Basketball program by specifying the
drive that the program disk is in preceding the program name. For
example, if you have just made "B" your default drive as in the above
example and your program disk is in drive "A" you should enter:
B> a:bsktball
This will cause the program to be executed from drive "A" and the data
created by SPORTSWARE:Basketball to be stored on drive "B".
Hard Disk Operations
No special requirements other than the previous examples are necessary
to run SPORTSWARE:Basketball from a hard disk. You can copy the
program to the hard disk using standards DOS commands and run in a
single drive configuration or you may make another drive the default
Sportsware:Basketball Version S1.2
Page 4
(which is where the data will be put) and follow the multiple disk
configuration example above.
Disk Space Utilization
SPORTSWARE:Basketball requires about 200 bytes of disk space per player
entered on the system. You can use the DOS DIR command to check the
current size of your data file (BSKTBALL.DAT) and the free space
remaining on the disk.
If you are running a single disk system, remember that the system
itself (BSKTBALL.EXE) and the manual (BSKTBALL.MAN) require disk space
also. You can use the DOS DIR command to check the size of these files
also. Once you have printed the manual you may ERASE BSKTBALL.MAN if
you need more disk space. If you took a backup, you will still have a
disk copy of the manual available.

GETTING STARTED
General Information
-------------------
After making your backup disk(s) you should print a copy of this manual
and read it. It shouldn't take long to familiarize yourself with the
operations of the system. Taking this time before you start entering
data can save you a lot of time latter. Take the time to read the
manual.
Basic Operating Information
---------------------------
SPORTSWARE:Basketball uses a DOS direct access file to keep track of
your statistics. It does this by assigning each player that you enter
into the system a unique identification number (ID). ID numbers start
with 2 and can be as large as 64000. As you add players to the system
you will note that each is being assigned a number by the system. The
only control you have over which player gets assigned which number is
the order in which you enter the players. The numbers are assigned
sequentially as needed.
You cannot delete an ID from the data file once it has been created.
You can however, use the UPDATE function to change the player
information in the record, thereby reusing the record. Since records
can not be deleted from the system, you must use care to insure that no
bad records are entered. Bad records are considered part of the file
and will be printed in the reports. Taking regular backups of your
data can help you ensure that you always have a "good" file to go back
to if you make a mistake.
You can get a listing of all the players on the file and their ID
numbers through the REPORTS MENU. This list should be kept handy when
you are working with the system. Remember, the ID number of the player
is the key to the system.
CURSOR MOVEMENT
---------------
The cursor is controlled by several different keys on the key board.
The descriptions of key locations refer to the IBM PC key board. The
basic functions of these keys are described below. If you press and
invalid key, you will hear a "beep" and no action will be taken.
The left and right arrow keys move the cursor 1 position at a time.
The arrow keys are located on the numeric key pad at the right of the
keyboard.
If you wish to move from one field to another you can use the TAB key
(next to the letter Q) to move to the next field, or use SHIFT/TAB to
move to the previous field.
If you wish to move a line at a time use PgUp to move to the first
field in the next line or PgDn to move the last field in the previous
Sportsware:Basketball Version S1.2
Page 6
line.
HOME will take you to the first field on the screen and END will take
you to the last field on the screen.
The back space key (the arrow above the enter key) will move the cursor
back one space and erase the character at that location.
If you press Ctrl and End at the same time the remainder of the field
that you are typing in will be cleared to blanks. This is a convenient
way of erasing the previous contents of a field without having to
manually blank over the remaining contents. Remember, the field will
only be blanked from the current location of the cursor to the end of
the field. The cursor will remain at its current location.
Finally, the grey carriage return arrow to the right of the white keys
is used to indicate the completion of your data entry. When you have
finished entering all the data necessary on a screen press this key to
enter the data into the file. From this point on, this key will be
refered to as the "enter key".
FUNCTION KEYS
-------------
Program selection within SPORTSWARE:Basketball is controlled by the
grey function keys on the left of the key board and by the ESC key in
the upper left of the key board next to the number 1.
With the exception of the MAIN MENU, the keys that are valid from any
screen are listed at the bottom of that screen. If you press an
invalid key, you will hear a "beep". When this happens, review your
key options at the bottom of the screen and try again.

The SYSTEM MENU is the main menu from which other portions of the
system are invoked. As you look at the menu you will see several
options before you. You will also notice that the number of players
currently on the file is displayed.
You select the option that you wish by pressing the "FUNCTION KEY" (the
grey keys on the left of an IBM-PC keyboard) that is associated with
the desired option. If you wish to return to DOS you press the "ESC"
key (grey key in the upper left next to "1").
If you press an invalid key you will hear a "BEEP".
PRESS F1 To ADD a new player to the file.
PRESS F2 To UPDATE an existing player on the file.
PRESS F3 To DISPLAY an existing player on the file.
PRESS F4 To go to the REPORTS menu.
PRESS ESC To end SPORTSWARE:Basketball and return to DOS.

ADDING A PLAYER
When you press F1 on the main menu or on the ADD screen you will enter
the ADD Player screen. This screen is used to ADD players to the file.
The program will automatically assign the next available ID number to
the player that is to be ADDed. You will see that number displayed in
reverse video in the upper right hand corner of the ADD screen.
Use the cursor movement keys described above to maneuver around the
screen and fill in all available information about the player. Once
you have all the information keyed in press the enter key. You will
see a flashing message in the bottom left of the screen indicating that
the ADD is complete. You may now press F1 to add another player or
press ESC to return to the main menu.
If you make a mistake entering the data, don't worry. You can always
repair the data with the UPDATE facility.

UPDATING A PLAYER
To update the current information about a player press F2 on the main
menu screen or on the Update screen.
After you have pressed F2 you will be asked for the ID of the player
that you wish to UPDATE. You should refer to your reports if you do
not know the ID of the player that you wish to UPDATE.
Use the cursor movement keys to maneuver around the screen and update
the information that you wish to change. When you have completed
UPDATEing the desired information press the enter key. When the UPDATE
is complete you will see a flashing message at the bottom left of the
screen indicating that the UPDATE is complete. Any new totals and
averages that are computed by the program are displayed.
When the UPDATE is complete you may press F2 to update another player,
enter additional information about the player currently being updated
or Press ESC to return to the main menu.
If you press F10 the next player ID will be selected for update. With
this facility you can step through a group of players without having to
enter each ID individually.

Before each report you are allowed to select a team to display. If you
do not select a team "ALL" of the IDs on the file will be printed. If
you do select a team, only the IDs of the players on the requested team
will be printed. This will allow you to print your reports by league
or by individual teams. Team names are "as is". Any capitalization
or punctuation must be exactly as entered on the player data for a
match.
Before each report you are also asked for the destination of the output
of the report. PRN: is the default. This will cause the report to be
printed on the printer. If you would like the report printed to a file
or some other device, enter that file or device name.
